Each tree is measured in height and breadth and noted accordingly

Age is determined by the width of the trunk although this will be affected by:

• • Soil quality
  • How much light, shade, heat and water does the tree have access to
  • How much space each tree has around it

Glasgow Tree Surveys commonly class trees by age. Here are the 5 classifications:

• Juvenile: less than 20 years
• Semi-mature: between 20 –60 years
• Mature: 60 –250 years
• Fully mature: 250 -800
• Ancient: 800 years+

NOTE: The above is a guide only. Different trees age at different rates. Faster-growing trees such as the birch are assumed ancient at 180 years. The slow-growing yew does not attain ancient status until at least 800 years.
